The Five Elements
Chinese Traditional Medicine believes that the “Yin” represents a negative and passive force while the “Yang” represents a positive active force. It is also believed that Yin and Yang support and also oppose each other. There is always a little bit of Yin within a Yang, and a little bit of Yang within a Yin. They are said to be mutually dependent forces.
In Chinese Traditional Medicine there are five elements that represent the five human organ systems corresponding to more than the individual body parts. These are the heart, kidney, spleen, liver and lung. Each of these five mentioned main organs is represented by an element.
Winter: Known as the time of water. In this the kidneys and bladder are governed by the water element. The urinary bladder is seen as the “Yang’ while the kidney seen as the “Yin”.
Spring: Known as the time of the wood. In this, the liver is governed by the wood element. The Gall Bladder is the “Yang” while the Liver is the “Yin”Summer: This is the time of fire. In this, the heart is the “Yin” and the Small Intestine is the “Yang”.
Late summer: In this, growth is believed to have been completed. Also known as the earth element. The Spleen is the “Yin” and the stomach is the “Yang”.
Autumn: The organs of autumn are the lungs and colon. The large intestine is the “Yang” while the Lung is the “Yin”.
Chinese traditional religion believes that every human has a unique blend of these elements.

Chinese Herbal medicine
